Benefits of Heat
Using heat is a great way to help sensitive horses who may find massage too much. Heat is non-invasive, gentle and well accepted with many associated benefits.
Research suggests that tissue temperature needs to increase by at least 3 to 5°C from the resting temperature (Bockstahler et al, 2004). However using something that is too hot could cause discomfort and even damage to the tissue.
Benefits of Massage
Massage and heat are two simple ways in which we can help support healthy muscle function in our hardworking horses.
Performance depends on freedom of movement, full flexibility and an absence of musculoskeletal pain, all of which can be improved using massage (Gellman, 1998). These factors also contribute towards keeping your horse comfortable and happy in general too!
Benefits of Massage include:
- Maintain healthy blood and lymph circulation.
- Soothes tired muscles.
- Supports recovery after exercise.
- Promotes relaxation.
Massage Pad Testing
The Equilibrium Massage Pad was independently tested by Myerscough College and the findings showed:
Increased Flexibility

Promoting Relaxation

FAQ
What setting should I use on my Massage Pad?
Low – Most gentle massage ideal for: box rest and after exercise as a gentle warm down
Medium – General everyday setting for use: before exercise as a warm up, at a show to help relax after travelling and on the day off work for your horse as part of a maintenance programme
High – Use for a more intense massage.
All horses are different and you will get to know what your horse enjoys and finds relaxing. Some horses will prefer a gentle massage on the low setting and some may enjoy a more intense massage.
How often does the Massage Battery need charging?
The battery will last at least twelve 30 minute massage sessions with the Massage Pad, however you may find it does more than this. Charge when the massage feels weaker.
Is the Massage Pad deep enough to affect the horse?
The Massage Pad, Mitt Hotspot and Massage Mitt were developed to provide a superficial (surface) massage to maintain the horses’ well being. This was proven in Equilibrium's tests by showing an increase in back flexibility and overall relaxation. The Massage Pad was not developed to replace the manual techniques of a qualified physiotherapist or massage therapist. Only a trained professional should carry out a massage to your horse that is able to reach the deeper muscles.
How should the Massage Pad, Mitt Hotspot and Mitt be stored?
Store the Massage Pad, Mitt Hotspot or Mitt somewhere dry and safe inside the bag it comes with. Avoid extreme temperatures to prevent damage to the battery and disconnect the battery. Please ensure the product is clean and dry before storage.
About Equilibrium
It all started when Timmy started frantically headshaking during ridden work shortly after he turned 5 years old. This lead to his owner, Margaret Donnelly, designing the Net Relief Muzzle Net to help him. Word got out about the Muzzle Net and how it helped Timmy and many other horses. Horse & Hound featured it and the phones started to go mad! Who would have thought one person trying to solve a problem with their horse could have such a large impact. From then on, Margaret realised she actually had lots of product ideas – Timmy was a source of inspiration! Fast forward 25 years and Equilibrium are still here with their core message of ‘Making a difference to horses’ lives.
